Layout Analysis - Empire Magazine Reviews

Our group decided we wanted to have the review featured in 'EMPIRE' magazine. In order to correctly structure and write the review I did some research in to the layout of EMPIRE's reviews.

Empire has a distinctive marker at the top of its review pages which allows the readers to identify the section which contains the reviews. 'IN CINEMAS'

<<

The reviews can either be full page, half page or lots of reviews in columns spread out over a double page.

Full page reviews tend to be the most popular films that have been released. They also have large pictures which are screen shots from the film rather then posters to identify the film, this is in order to show the reader this is an important review of a really good film.

The ratings are also easily accessible at the end of each review, this allows the reader to quickly look at the overall review to see how good the film is and then decide if they want to read the full review, furthermore some reviews have quotes enlarged and put in a different colour (red) in order to attract the readers eye, this is also done with important names, for example below it says 'The Coens move in mysterious ways ', so if someone is specifically a fan of the Coen Brothers then they will notice it and it will encourage them to read the review.

Lastly the reviews placed in columns are often the ones in which films came up short in the reviewers opinion, there are often a few of them spaced out over a double page, they don't usually receive more then two or three stars, also the reviews are often quite short. Adverts are also placed in these pages to make people stop and look, this in a way helps the audience to learn about all kinds of current film, even the ones which are rated poorly, these adverts are for currently popular things (below is an advert for the TV series True Blood) this encourages the reader to stop and peruse the pages containing the reviews for the films which werent very good as well as looking at the advert.

First Mock Up Of Film Poster

Today..

Today in media studies i continued working on the original mock up of our poster, i had to restart due to file loss so then i made some changes to the photographs being used.

When we make the proper poster we will take all the images ourselves and edit them together on photoshop, however for the purpose of the mock up we used google images.
